This database contains information about marriages officiated by Henry Collins at the Lamberton Toll

The information was obtained from the Registers of Irregular Boarder Marriages "Marriages at Lamberton Toll 1833-1849".

An irregular marriage is one that was one that took place in Scotland based on a verbal agreement. Such marriages were disapproved of by 'the church' but were, however, lawful.

Probably the most well-known place for "irregular" marriages would be Gretna Green but there were several other places that were used for such marriages, especially in the border region. Lamberton Toll is basically the East Coast equivalent of Gretna Green on the West coast. Due to their more relaxed marriage rules they were popular for couples eloping or marrying 'in a hurry' (I will leave it up to you to interpret). They were also popular with couples living close to the border of England and Scotland as a marriage venue.

The information in the database is entered exactly as it appeared in the registry. In other words the spellings and abbreviations are as they appeared in the registers. So Wm. would be William but it is recorded as Wm. in the database.

It should also be noted that the spellings are entered as they appeared and that sometimes names of people and places are potentially incorrectly spelled. Such were things back then. For example Isabella could be spelt Isibellea!

The database currently covers the years (month in brackets) 1833- (January)1849 and there are currently 2544 total records in database.
