ASLFMID is little program that we use to determine if a program has
been tested on a certain level of the operating system.
It uses two FMID values, one is the lowest level FMID that a program was tested
on, the other is the highest level FMID.
It does not use the full FMID, just the last 4 characters. (i.e. 7750 rather
than HJE7750).
There are three possible return codes from ASLFMID. These are:
- Condition Code 0 - All is good. The program has been tested on the current level of the operating system.
- Condition Code 4 - The program is running on the higher level of operating than it has been tested on.
- Condition Code 8 - The program is running on the lower level of the operating system than it has been tested on.
It is recommended that ASLFMID is not changed to the reflect the current
version of an operating system until all programs that use it have been tested
on the new operating system.
If a program is running on a lower version of the operating system than it has
been tested on, this considered more risky than a higher version, hence the
different condition code. A program could rely on a function or instruction
that does not exist on that operating system.
A non-zero return code does not mean that the calling program will not
work correctly, it is simply a warning.
ASLFMID will check for the presence of a SHOWFMID DD card. If
one is present it will display the FMID of the operating system it is running
on. The SHOWFMID does not impact the program in any other way than
displaying a WTO.
If you choose to install ASLFMID then you need to follow the steps
detailed below.
